HVAC Maintenance Plan in Hillsdale, MI
Two visits, two months that matter, and two rebates to price it against
In Hillsdale, MI and across the county: what a yearly plan should actually contain, when each visit belongs in the calendar, and what to measure the price against.
Two things set the maintenance calendar in Hillsdale County, Michigan: more than half the heating demand lands in three months, and the AC tune-up rebate closes on 30 September.
Request service
- $65 + $65 the Consumers furnace/boiler and AC tune-up rebates — the floor for pricing any plan Consumers Energy 2026
- 30 Sep the closing date on the AC tune-up rebate. The heating one has no such window Consumers Energy 2026
- 53% of annual heating demand in December, January and February Derived · NOAA 1991–2020
What a Plan Should Contain
- A heating service before the season, with the measurements written down — combustion, heat exchanger condition, flame sensor, blower, flue, controls and safeties. See furnace tune-ups.
- A cooling service inside the rebate window — refrigerant charge verified, temperature split measured, coils and condensate drain checked. See AC tune-ups.
- The supply side checked on a tank-fed house — vents clear of snow and ice, regulator and tank condition. Per Propane Education and Research Council guidance this is not optional, and it is the part a generic plan omits.
- Written readings, not a slip that says serviced. The point of an annual plan is a year-on-year comparison, and you cannot compare a tick box.
- Priority scheduling in the January window, if it is offered — that is the benefit with real value in this climate.
What to read carefully: a plan whose main selling point is a discount on work you would not otherwise buy is selling you the work, not the plan.
The Calendar Is Set by Two Things
September, because of the climate
On the NOAA 1991–2020 normals for the nearest long-record station, Hillsdale County runs to 6,469.8 heating degree days a year — with December at 1,088.0, January at 1,258.4 and February at 1,076.5, about 53 percent of the annual total by our arithmetic. A marginal furnace runs through a mild autumn without complaint and fails on the first stretch that demands full output. Found in September it is a scheduled repair; found in January it is an emergency in a cold house.
April to September, because of the rebate
The Consumers Energy AC tune-up measure — $65 — is claimable only between 1 April and 30 September. The furnace and boiler tune-up rebate, also $65, carries no seasonal restriction. So the cooling visit has a hard closing date and the heating visit does not, which is the opposite of how most people schedule them.
What to Measure the Price Against
We are not publishing a plan price, because there is no plan behind this site to price yet and inventing one would be exactly the kind of number this site refuses to print. What we can give you is the benchmark:
| Rebate | Value | Who can claim |
|---|---|---|
| Furnace or boiler tune-up | $65 | Consumers gas customers. Not Hillsdale or Coldwater, which are on Michigan Gas Utilities |
| AC tune-up, 1 Apr – 30 Sep | $65 | Consumers electric customers. Not inside the City of Hillsdale, which is on the municipal BPU |
| Propane household | $0 | No utility tune-up rebate — a dealer is not a regulated utility |
A plan that costs more than two services minus whichever rebates you can actually claim has to justify the difference on something else — priority scheduling, or a discount you would genuinely use. Full rebate table on what things cost.

Maintenance Plan FAQ
What should an annual HVAC maintenance plan include?
For a heating-dominated county like this one: a heating service before the season, a cooling service inside the 1 April to 30 September window when the Consumers AC tune-up rebate is claimable, written measurements rather than a slip that says serviced, and — on a tank-fed house — the supply side checked rather than assumed. Anything beyond that is worth reading carefully. Priority scheduling and discounted rates are real benefits; a plan whose main selling point is a discount on work you would not otherwise buy is not.
How much does a maintenance plan cost?
We are not publishing a price, because there is no plan behind this site yet to price. Doing otherwise would be inventing a number for a product that does not exist, which is the one thing this site does not do. What we can tell you is what the rebates are worth against it: Consumers Energy pays $65 for a furnace or boiler tune-up to its gas customers, and $65 for an AC tune-up to its electric customers between 1 April and 30 September. Those two figures are the floor any plan should be measured against.
Is a maintenance plan worth it on a propane system?
The case is arguably stronger than on a metered house. A propane household buys fuel from an unregulated dealer at a delivered price, so efficiency lost to a dirty burner is fuel that was trucked in and paid for up front rather than metered afterwards. There is also more to check — vents clear of snow and ice, regulator and tank condition, and the supply side generally, per Propane Education and Research Council guidance. And propane households get no utility tune-up rebate, because a dealer is not a regulated utility.
When should the visits be scheduled?
Heating in September, cooling between April and September. The heating timing is about the climate: December, January and February carry about 53 percent of the year’s heating degree days in this county, so a fault found in September is a scheduled repair and the same fault found in January is an emergency. The cooling timing is about the rebate: the $65 Consumers AC tune-up measure is claimable only between 1 April and 30 September, so a service in October has no rebate attached however good it is.
Ask About an Annual Plan
Tell us what equipment is in the house and what fuel it burns. There is no plan priced behind this site yet — what we can do now is tell you what a good one should contain.
There is no phone number published on this site yet, so requests come in through this form — we reply by email or call you back on the number you give. That is also why the phone field is required rather than optional.
