- 1 Apr – 30 Sep the only window in which the $65 Consumers AC tune-up rebate can be claimed Consumers Energy 2026
- $65 the rebate itself, for Consumers electric customers Consumers Energy 2026
- 2 weeks the filter cleaning interval on a ductless head, between professional services DOE/PNNL Building America
The Window Nobody Mentions
Consumers Energy's 2026 residential measures include $65 for an AC tune-up, and unlike almost everything else on the list it carries a hard date range: 1 April to 30 September only. The furnace and boiler tune-up rebate, also $65, has no such restriction.
Which means a service booked in October — a perfectly sensible time to tidy up after the season — has no rebate attached to it. Book inside the window and the same work costs $65 less, assuming Consumers is your supplier.
Whether you qualify depends on who sells you electricity
Homes inside the City of Hillsdale buy electricity from the Hillsdale Board of Public Utilities, a municipal utility with 6,131 customers, so they are not Consumers electric customers and their efficiency programme runs through Efficiency Smart. Outside the city limits, Consumers is the supplier and the measure applies. Full rebate table on what things cost.
What a Tune-Up Should Measure
- Refrigerant charge verified, not assumed from how the system feels.
- Temperature split measured across the coil — the number that tells you whether it is actually performing.
- Coils checked and cleaned, indoor and outdoor.
- Condensate drain cleared. A blocked drain is the cheapest fault to prevent and one of the more expensive to discover.
- Blower and filter checked, and the filter changed.
- Electrical connections, contactor and capacitor inspected — the components that most often strand a system on the first hot day.
- Outdoor unit cleared of debris and growth.
Ask for the readings. A written record of the temperature split and the charge gives you something to compare against next year; a slip that says "serviced" does not.
Ductless Systems Run on a Different Schedule
Department of Energy and PNNL Building America guidance is specific: wall heads need professional blower-wheel cleaning every one to three years, with filter cleaning every two weeks in between. The two-week filter interval is the part people do not expect, and skipping it is the usual reason a ductless system underperforms after a couple of seasons.
The outdoor unit also wants checking that it is still sitting clear — Building America recommends mounting on a pad above snow height, which in IECC zone 5A is a working requirement rather than a nicety. See ductless mini-splits.
We publish no tune-up price because we have no sourced local figure for one. What we can tell you is exactly what the rebate is worth and when it is claimable, which is the part that changes the number you pay.

AC Maintenance FAQ
When can I claim the $65 AC tune-up rebate in Hillsdale County?
Between 1 April and 30 September, and only if Consumers Energy is your electric supplier. That date window is unusual among the 2026 measures — the furnace and boiler tune-up rebate has no seasonal restriction, but the AC one does. Book it in October and there is no rebate to claim, however good the service. Homes inside the City of Hillsdale are not Consumers electric customers at all: they buy from the municipal Board of Public Utilities and go through Efficiency Smart instead.
What should an AC tune-up include?
Coil condition checked and cleaned, refrigerant charge verified rather than assumed, the condensate drain cleared, the blower and filter checked, electrical connections and the contactor and capacitor inspected, the outdoor unit cleared of debris, and temperature split measured across the coil. What you want back is the measurements, not a slip that says serviced. On a ductless system the schedule is different: Building America guidance calls for professional blower-wheel cleaning on the wall heads every one to three years, with filter cleaning every two weeks in between.
Is an annual AC service worth it in a climate like this?
The cooling season here is short — Hillsdale County is IECC climate zone 5A, "Cold", with 6,469.8 heating degree days a year — which cuts both ways. Fewer running hours means slower wear, but it also means faults sit unnoticed for eight or nine months and then surface on the first hot week. The rebate tilts the arithmetic: at $65 back for Consumers electric customers, a routine service costs materially less than it looks.
Does a heat pump need servicing twice a year?
A heat pump runs in both seasons, so it accumulates hours a cooling-only system does not, and it is checked as both a heating and a cooling appliance. Note the rebate consequence in this county: Consumers pays $65 for an AC tune-up between 1 April and 30 September and $65 for a furnace or boiler tune-up for gas customers, so which of those a heat pump falls under is worth confirming with Consumers directly rather than assuming.
